She Stayed
A poem about the unforeseen consequences of our actions
Even after he hit her,
she stayed
“For the children,”
she said.
Her children
watched.
They copied her example,
for that’s what children do.
We
lead,
they
follow.
The boys became men-
who hit women
The girls became women-
who stayed.
